I stare at the reflection in front of me.

Unable to say a single word, I stand there mute.

Something inside me snaps and I look away.

I should know her but unfortuately the girl staring back at me I don’t recognize.

One word, a voice in me urges.

But it’s useless.

I don’t feel beautiful, and I don’t have the courage to face her again.

Turning away, I nearly leave, dejected.

Suddenly, a different thought arises.

What do you like about yourself? Start there.

I pause.

Slowly, I turn and looked back at the expectant face.

Diligent,” I whisper softly.

Louder, the voice commands.

“I love how diligent you are.”

Prouder.

“You’re a hard worker and consistent. I love that about you.”

Confidence seeps into my body.

Straightening my back, I stand a little taller.

I stare directly at the girl in front of me and smile.

A genuine smile.

And wouldn’t you know it? I think I saw her smile back.

Outer beauty attracts, but inner beauty captivates.”
